Psalm 112[a]

Praise the Lord.[b](A)

Blessed are those(B) who fear the Lord,(C)
    who find great delight(D) in his commands.

Their children(E) will be mighty in the land;
    the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches(F) are in their houses,
    and their righteousness endures(G) forever.
Even in darkness light dawns(H) for the upright,
    for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.(I)
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,(J)
    who conduct their affairs with justice.

Surely the righteous will never be shaken;(K)
    they will be remembered(L) forever.
They will have no fear of bad news;
    their hearts are steadfast,(M) trusting in the Lord.(N)
Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;(O)
    in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.(P)
They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,(Q)
    their righteousness endures(R) forever;
    their horn[c] will be lifted(S) high in honor.

10 The wicked will see(T) and be vexed,
    they will gnash their teeth(U) and waste away;(V)
    the longings of the wicked will come to nothing.(W)

Unfaithful Israel

During the reign of King Josiah,(A) the Lord said to me, “Have you seen what faithless(B) Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every spreading tree(C) and has committed adultery(D) there. I thought that after she had done all this she would return to me but she did not, and her unfaithful sister(E) Judah saw it.(F) I gave faithless Israel(G) her certificate of divorce(H) and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear;(I) she also went out and committed adultery. Because Israel’s immorality mattered so little to her, she defiled the land(J) and committed adultery(K) with stone(L) and wood.(M) 10 In spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return(N) to me with all her heart, but only in pretense,(O)” declares the Lord.(P)

11 The Lord said to me, “Faithless Israel is more righteous(Q) than unfaithful(R) Judah.(S) 12 Go, proclaim this message toward the north:(T)

“‘Return,(U) faithless(V) Israel,’ declares the Lord,
    ‘I will frown on you no longer,
for I am faithful,’(W) declares the Lord,
    ‘I will not be angry(X) forever.
13 Only acknowledge(Y) your guilt—
    you have rebelled against the Lord your God,
you have scattered your favors to foreign gods(Z)
    under every spreading tree,(AA)
    and have not obeyed(AB) me,’”
declares the Lord.

14 “Return,(AC) faithless people,” declares the Lord, “for I am your husband.(AD) I will choose you—one from a town and two from a clan—and bring you to Zion.

Adultery

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[a](A) 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.(B) 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble,(C) gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble,(D) cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Divorce

31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[b](E) 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(F)

Oaths

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath,(G) but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’(H) 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all:(I) either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;(J) 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.(K) 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.
